How Do You Choose A Tech?

Choosing a technician or repair shop can be a challenge.  We, unfortunately, rank right around used car salesmen and lawyers when it comes to overall reputation.  And that really upsets the ones (like me) who invest literally thousands of dollars in tools and training to be able to repair the high technology automobiles being produced today.

As a consumer, there are a few things you can do to find the "good guys"!

Look for ASE certification

ASE is an independent testing organization that certifies technicians in several areas, with the highest level being that of "Certified Master Auto Technician".  It's not required, but many consider it a way to show our customers that we do know what we are doing.  So ask to see the certifications of the technicians working on your car.  And be wary if the tech working on your car is not certified in the area he is repairing.

Look for membership in professional organizations

You will find a link at www.iatn.net called "Shop Finder" at this site.  This is the International Automotive Technicians Network and has minimum requirements for membership.  While not a sure thing for finding a professional, it does up your odds quite a bit.

Other organizations can be particular to your state.  If membership is voluntary, then add that as a plus.

Look for honesty

Any technician worth his salt should be able to take a customer out to their car and show them what is wrong and why...in language they can understand.  We all know when someone is feeding us a line of BS, and who is not.  The main thing is to be comfortable with your technician, much as you would with any other trusted professional advisor.  After all, it's your car AND your safety he's working on.

Cheap is not always a good thing

We all have to watch our pennies, but don't be penny smart and dollar foolish.  Good technicians are increasingly rare, and are worth what they charge.  Again, it's your car AND your safety involved.  My personal belief is that I'm like the family doctor...when you come in for a check-up it's my responsibility to inform you of the total health of your car and make recommendations accordingly.  Some issues need to be addressed right away...like a leaking brake system.  Others can wait until it's in the budget....

And a good technician stands behind what he does.  If he was wrong is his diagnosis and repair, he'll say so...and make good on it.

Found a Good One?  Stick By Him!

I hope these few ideas help you find a good repair shop to take care of you and your car.  When you do...stay with him.  Don't come to him just for the big stuff, while you take your routine maintenance to the discount place.  He's spending hours staying current to be the best he can be for you, and you know he's worth it!
