I started working on cars in 1975, working part-time in a full service, local gas station. Those were the days that you could get your oil changed, brakes fixed and tires replaced at the same shop you got your gas. In those days, electronic controls were just starting to make their debut, and the only thing electronic on most of the cars I worked on was the radio...and an AM radio at that!
I've seen a lot change since then. The days of the "shade tree" mechanic are over...things are just to technical anymore. There is literally no system on the car of today that doesn't involve electronics and computers...even the tires are monitored!
I am an ASE Certified Master Auto Technician, a sponsoring member of IATN, and a trained vocational instructor, certified by both the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools and the Polk County, Florida school system. I am the CarQuest/Mobile Air Conditioning Society "AC Technician of the Year" for 2006, and now work with MACS as a regional trainer. I started writing by accident, but now regularly contribute to Motor Age, and ACtion magazines. I've even authored my first book...you can find more info on that in our bookstore.
And I still turn wrenches for a living!
I firnly believe that this business is one that demands continuing education. Come to my house, and you'll see technical manuals, TSBs, and trade magazines...I hardly ever read anything else anymore. And I want to try real hard to write articles and provide training that will help the "average" technician work easier and (should I really say it?) make more money...so do me a favor, and let me know how I"m doing!
I hope you enjoy the site, and thanks for visiting!
